CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

When I arrived at my tearoom the next morning, I was surprised to find Cassie in a flaming temper. She was in the kitchen, pacing back and forth next to the wooden table in the centre, fuming and gesticulating, whilst Dora listened sympathetically. For a moment, I thought she must have fallen foul of incompetent traffic police again when leaving her house that morning, then I realised that she was waving something in one hand and pointing to it with loathing.

“…a total wanker! I can’t believe how he’s twisted my words and completely changed the meaning. I swear if I ever see him again, he’ll be sorry! I’ve half a mind to report him to the—Gemma!” She broke off as she saw me. “Er… hi. Good morning.”

“Doesn’t sound that good from your point of view,” I observed. “What’s wrong, Cass? Why are you so angry?”

“Because of this!” Cassie slammed the newspaper she had been holding down on the table in front of me.

My eyes widened as I took in the front page. It featured a large professional photograph of Azalea Chu standing in front of her newly opened tea bar, one hand casually resting on a hip in the standard pose used by models and celebrities when fronting the cameras. In the corner was a smaller inset image, which showed a blurry picture of me, hovering between two tables at the Little Stables, a tray in my hands and a harassed expression on my face. It was not a flattering picture and had obviously been taken from a distance, probably through the tearoom windows by a furtive photographer.

What really made me suck in a breath of dismay, though, was the headline that dominated the page:
